Why You Need a Tent
Two words. Murphy’s Law. Rain can and will happen at the most inopportune times. Unless your venue comes with an alternate indoor option you’re going to need a tent. Even on a clear day excessive heat or cold can ruin an otherwise excellent party. You can choose your tent, but you can’t choose the weather. Add tent rental on your to-do list and budget under ‘venue’ so that no matter the weather your event will be covered. Pun intended.
What Size Tent do You Need?
First, determine what style of event you’re planning. A stand-Up Cocktail-Style reception, for instance, will require much less space per person than a seated dinner will. Most wedding planners will suggest 6 sq. ft. per person for Cocktail-Style and up to 12 sq. ft. per person for seated dinners. Once you know what kind of party you’re throwing here’s a helpful chart for selecting a tent size.
Other Things to Consider
Choosing the right tent or canopy for your special event is critical to the comfort of your guests and the smooth flow of traffic throughout the event site. Here are some other things you’ll need to consider:
- What kind of surface will the tent be placed on? Grass, concrete, asphalt, wood deck?
- How much space do you have? Dimensions of tent site?
- What other items would you like to have under the tent? Buffet, bar, cake table, dance floor, stage, etc.?
- What time of day will your event take place? Will you need lights and/or heat?
- Is there a power source at the site? What are your power requirements?
- Do you wish to enclose any portion of the tent?
- Will you need accessory tents for caterer’s prep station, beverage service station, or to feature a focal point such as an ice sculpture or wedding cake?
